My Job as a Breast Oncology Surgeon – a Day in the Life of Sanjay

Part of my philosophy is being open with my patients and their families to ensure that they feel as comfortable as possible through their cancer journey. To help you to visualise and understand my approach, I’ve put together a timeline of my normal day-to-day activities.

My day usually begins early in the morning, as I visit inpatients with my trusted clinical team. Depending on the specific needs of each of my patients, this may take some time as we ensure each feels comfortable and cared for.

Depending on the day, I then either attend my clinic to see my patients, or go into theatre.

On surgery days, I head into the theatre where my skilled team are waiting to help me undertake a day of operations that have been arranged after careful discussion with my patients. Surgery can vary from biopsies, the removal of a suspicious lump, a mastectomy, or a breast reconstruction.

On clinic days, I meet with my patients. With new patients, I take extra time to offer support and reassurance. I answer questions in detail so that as a new patient leaves my consult room they have confidence they’ll be well cared for during their cancer treatment. Other appointments on clinic days will vary from consultations with existing patients; post-operative care ensuring healing is going well, or follow-ups to check in regularly after treatment.

One of the best parts of my job is telling my patients that an operation has gone well and that they are now cancer free.
