Breast Conserving Surgery

Breast Conserving Surgery

This type of surgery aims to conserve breast tissue by removing only the cancerous tissue, so that the breast looks normal even after the operation. It is usually followed by a moderate-dose radiation therapy to destroy any residual cancerous cells. The surgery aims at providing a low recurrence of cancer, and when combined with radiation therapy, survival is equivalent to that of mastectomy (complete removal of the breast tissue).
